The Sierra Club is acknowledging some of today’s top universities for going green. The green title is not just reserved for smaller private schools anymore. Bigger schools are in the mix now too using smarter construction, offering more programs in environmental studies, trading in their gas-guzzling vehicle fleets for fuel-efficient ones, and looking to alternative forms of energy.

So, what do students think about all of this? Forty-three percent of students state a preference for socially responsible brands. Research also shows that one in four students said they have purchased a product this year specifically because it was from a socially conscious company.

Students understand the power they have as a consumer and will use it to make a difference if there is a choice. It’s their way of participating in something that has meaning to them. Many students will seek out environmentally friendly brands or socially responsible products.

If your brand has no green or social initiative, you might be in trouble with youth today. Our recommendation? Ask your employees what they are passionate about, and build a program around that. Labeling yourself “green” is not enough. Your cause has to be genuine.

With that being said, here are some great “green” campuses for college marketing (via Sierra Club) :

#1 Middlebury College
#2 University of Colorado-Boulder
#3 University of Vermont at Burlington
#4 Warren Wilson College
#5 Evergreen State
#6 Arizona State
#7 University of Florida – Gainesville
#8 Oberlin College
#9 University of Washington
#10 Tufts University
